What does Gua Sha mean?
The term “Gua sha” is made up of two Chinese words meaning scrape (gua) and sand (sha). The term denotes the appearance of the tiny blood spots that can temporarily appear under the skin during a facial Gua sha. These temporary blood spots, or petechiae, look like pebbles of sand under the skin, and can be avoided by applying less pressure to the skin and by using a rose quartz stone.
According to traditional Chinese medicine, Gua sha creates friction to help clear “internal” heat and stagnation. When you create friction under your facial skin, you’re activating circulation.
As we know from both ancient and modern medicine, good circulation promotes good health.
